Web/Website Accessibility

Another great reason why DedGud stands out from the rest.

We have endeavoured to remove barriers to this website and all websites that we create so that people with disabilities can access information and use the website as easily as possible, with all the functionality that should be expected by us all. For more information about helping disabled adults and children use computers and the internet go to AbilityNet(Please note: this link will open the page in a new browser window).

We have designed:

  • ‘skip over repeated elements’ such as navigation menus and logos
  • put text equivalents for ALL graphics, including using the <aria-describedby> attribute for some important graphics that some browsers and readers can use to give a description of images
  • made links descriptive and make sense
  • ensured that there is sufficient colour contrast between the text and background and that colour alone is not used to convey information
  • our site has been designed with style sheets to allow maximum flexibility and separation of presentation from content
  • header tags have been effectively added to this site to help clarity of the website as well as other techniques to assist accessibility

External Links

Most of the external links on our site will load in a new browser window. Any external link will be clearly denoted by wording such as ‘(Please note: this link will open a new window)’.

Skip Links

If you are using an audio browser (screen reader software) there are links that allow you to skip over various sections of a page.

International Standards

Here is a list of the standards that we strive to meet on all of our pages.

  • The W3C international standard for Cascading Style Sheet level 3 (CSS3) standards, the language that should be used for the presentation and styling of a website.
  • The W3C international standard for Level Triple-A conformance, W3C WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 explain how to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities. Conformance to these guidelines will help make the Web more accessible to users with disabilities and will benefit all users.
  • We have used the internationally recognised Web Accessibility In Mind (Please note: this link will open the page in a new browser window) services to develop and test the accessibility of our site using their "WAVE" tool.
  • The W3C international standard for XHTML 5 is still not yet fully operational so we cannot show that our site is compliant. As soon as the standard is released and the W3C has a tool to prove compliance we are sure we will already be compliant! We have taken the care to create an interoperable web page and that it complies to international standards of XHTML 5 (one of the latest programming languages behind the web).

Testing

The websites we create are tested to the best of our abilities on a wide variety of browsers, operating systems and screen resolutions.

  • To ensure compliance to the international standards listed above, thereby guaranteeing that different browsers will render the web page as intended and that assistive technology (which is designed considering these standards) works well
  • Different screen resolutions
  • Different platforms - Mac and PC
  • Different Browsers - Firefox(on Mac and PC) and Internet Explorer
  • Without images - a text equivalent is displayed
  • With Javascript turned off - it still works, the content is available and makes sense. Note - external links will not open a new browser if Javascript is turned off! This is a limitation of current browsers using the modern version of HTML.
  • Without Cascading Style Sheets - it still works, the content is available and makes sense
